Work has been underway in the European Union (EU) for many years to create an integrated gas and electricity market within the member states.
The European Commission (EC) claims that the regulations will help provide benefits for both consumers and suppliers, in particular smaller companies and those that invest in renewable technologies. Member states were due to draft the EU regulations into national law in July 2004.
